Love

Philippians 2:5-8

The love of Christ is a selfless, serving love. Christ’s emptying of himself as he took on the humble form of man is the truest form of love. In contrast, the world loves carefully and selfishly. We choose people to love that will love us back. We give favors that we know can be repaid or that don’t cost us too much. We find ourselves clinging to our “me time” or our identities we have created for ourselves. We walk past people who need help and we overlook our friends’ or spouse’s needs as we seek our own desires.

But Jesus, whose identity is actually the most high and who we could never repay for his love, emptied himself so that we could know him. He lived a humble, lowly life, and died a horrific, criminal death so that we would have an honored place in his kingdom. THAT is love. Jesus willingly left all honor and glory for us.

Prayer:

Lord, thank you for your selfless love for us. Teach us to love in a way that requires emptying ourselves.

Question to consider:

What is your next step in selfless love? Recall Jesus’ sacrifice for you, and meditate on this humble love.
