Promise
Isaiah 9:6-7
God made a promise—a child would come. Consider slowly these names: The government on His shoulders, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.
Just as God declared, Christ would be born. These names would mark His nature. Who else could shoulder the government of the nations? Who else could give the counsel necessary to be called Wonderful? Who else could be the Mighty God? Share the nature of the Everlasting Father? Be the Prince of Peace?
God’s promises are made and kept by Him. Simply put, when He says He will, He does. The simplicity of His reliability is seen not only in the simple names that the Child is given, but in the consistency with which God keeps His promises. As Christ came as a child, he would carry these names through His life, to the Cross, and out the empty Tomb: Our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace
Prayer:
God, help me to remember that you keep your promises and help me to remember what this Child is like, and what He has done.
Question to consider:
Which of these names for the Child—Christ—do you need to remember today? Why?
